Adsense Code
How To Add It To Webpages

Placing the Adsense code in your HTML document is the final step in the ad-building process and is necessary so that the ad shows up on your webpages. Let's begin with the high level steps of building an ad and end with how to add the code to your pages.

How To Build An Adsense Ad Unit

  • Sign up for a free account if you have not already done so
  • Build the ad unit (as opposed to a link unit) in the Adsense user interface:
    • On the first screen choose the "Adsense For Content" product
    • Next under "Ad Unit", choose "Text ads only" or "Text and Image ads"? Click here to learn why we recommend Text and Image ads.
    • Then decide Size of Ad (Format), Color of Ad and Font Size. You can also choose the corner style and what to display if no relevant ads are available.
    • Next up, Channels. If you want to be able to track the ad's performance separate from other ads that you place on your site, set up a special channel. I think of them as a category. I use the same ad on more than one page (ex. all my wine-related pages have the same ad) so I have a channel, or category, called "WinePages." This way I can view performance of my wine-related pages separate from other results.

Adding Adsense Code To Webpages

Now that you have built the ad, the final step is to copy the HTML code and paste it into your webpage document exactly where you want the ad to appear or into an include file if you use them.

After the Channels screen mentioned above, you will come to a screen that looks like this one. Just click on the "Submit and get Code" button.

Lastly, paste the HTML Adsense code into position on your webpage. Read up on the Google Heat Map before doing so.
