BOTTOM LINE: We presell customers on our website using text links and/or banners which have our affiliate code embedded in them. If they take the desired action (click on the link, fill out a form, buy a product), then we earn a commission.
Why Is An Affiliate Online Marketing Business So Attractive?
There are several reasons why a webmaster might want to utilize his or her website to promote other people's products. The obvious ones are:
- No responsibility for product develop
- Do not have to hold or ship inventory
- Customer service falls on the merchant not the website owner
Especially when you are first starting out, these are very attractive reasons primarily because the cost of getting an affiliate marketing online business up and running is minimal.
All you need is a website or blog and the ability to place links on your site.
Types of Affiliate Online Programs
- Independent Affiliate Programs - In this type of program, a merchant runs the entire thing on their own. They are responsible for affiliate sign up and providing links, tracking and paying commissions. The most well known independent affiliate program is Amazon.com.
Amazon.com was the first affiliate program I signed up with. In my opinion, it is the perfect place to start because their user interface is by far the easiest to use and understand. They really make it easy on people who are trying to start an affiliate marketing online business. Every tool is available for the affiliate marketer including an excellent statistics interface.
Other examples of independent programs that I am signed up with are Barplan.com and Swankmartini.com.
- Affiliate Network Programs For Hard Goods - Probably two of the most popular are Commission Junction and Linkshare. Basically these companies serve as middlemen between merchants and website owners of which there are hundreds in the network.
Merchants pay a fee to become part of the network. For that fee the affiliate network handles everything for them from affiliate sign up through commission payments.
Rarely, if ever, does a website owner have direct contact with the merchants. Everything is done through the affiliate network.
Each network has their own user interface. In my opinion they are nowhere near as easy to use as Amazon.com, but if you want to promote certain products and their affiliate program is run by a network, you have no choice but to sign up.
Another big difference between independent programs and affiliate networks is that there is one more step when signing up at affiliate networks; you have to sign up for specific merchants too.
Some merchants will automatically approve you. Others will want to manually review your site to see if it meets their standards, usually involving website traffic, the look and feel of the site and the type of content you offer.
- Affiliate Network Programs For Digital Products - The most popular networks for digital products are Clickbank and PayDotCom.com. This is where creators of digital products and affiliates converge.
Creators of digital products (ebooks, videos, audio recordings...) provide basic information, including a link to their sales page and the commission percentage they will pay affiliates. Affiliates search the "Marketplace" for products to promote and then place links on their site or in emails to the creator's sales page.
Commissions are generally much higher on digital products as creators have virtually no overhead costs. Once the product is created, buyers simply download directly from their computers saving the creator a boatload of money.
Lastly, you will find merchants offering better terms and conditions at affiliate networks (higher commissions, longer cookies..) than you will at Amazon.com.
Most affiliate marketers use a combination of programs and promote several different products. The process is basically the same. Sign up, choose products, get the HTML code, place links on your site and then track your success. Promote the products that work and drop the products that don't.
