Best Type and Size To Use

I have experimented with several different Google ad types and sizes and although many of them have earned income, I have found what I am about to share to be the correct formula for my site. I learned this technique from a fellow SBIer.

Whether you are just in the planning stage of how to monetize your website or you have already implemented Adsense on your site, you will find that getting in the habit of using this technique will benefit you in the long wrong.

It is a wash, rinse and repeat methodology that is easy to replicate once you get the hang of it. When I first heard this, it made alot of sense to me so I implemented it immediately and began seeing results the very next day.

Summary

We will get into more detail below but at a high level this technique involves:

• Always using a combination of text and image ads
• Always using a combination of different ad sizes
• Always strategically placing ads using the Google Heat Map

Type of Google Ad To Use

When I first started monetizing my sites, I was in the habit of using only text ads and never had placed an image ad on either of my sites because I was afraid of it looking too cluttered.

Eventually I had to remind myself of what I am trying to accomplish with my sites. First and foremost, my goal is to bring quality information to my visitors, but in order to do so, I have to be able to pay the bills associated with running my websites.

With this in mind, I relented and added image ads to my both of my sites. Why? Because I learned that doing so would most likely result in better Adsense earning potential.

I don't always like how they look but by allowing image ads, I am providing advertisers with multiple options. Not only can they place text ads, they can also place image ads which are becoming absolutely necessary in order to sell most products.

By providing more options, I have made my sites more attractive to advertisers while continuing to provide great content for my visitors. A win-win for everybody.

Size of Google Ad To Use

In addition to always using text ads, I was also in the habit of primarily using only one ad size (250 x 250) in up to 3 different locations on a page (see How Many Ads Can I Have? for more information).

I had heard about the importance of using different sizes on the same page but never really understood why it was so important so I just stuck with one size.

I now understand that using different ad sizes creates the highest level of competition for those ad spaces and if you have allowed 3 different sizes of ads, you could potentially win the highest bidder in each of these spaces!

What was happening before when I was doing only one ad size was that I could only get the top bidder once and then the other two spots would be filled with less important ads.

Attracting top bidders means more competition for the space and that translates to higher cost per click so you end up with more money in your pocket. Sounds pretty good right?

Google has several sizes of ads for every spot on your website but four in particular are their most profitable ads for most webmasters. Their "bread and butter" Google ads are:

• 300x250
• 336x280
• 728x90
• 160x600

Take advantage of using a different Google ad in every spot available and make sure you allow image ads in every single space. Just making these two changes could have a significant impact on your Adsense earning potential.
