Print and Use To Position Adsense Ads
As far as placement of your ads is concerned, I have tried just about everything and eventually made my way to the all-important Google Heat Map PDF which I should have been using from the start.
Here is what Google has to say about the Heat Map:
"Certain locations tend to be more successful than others. This heat map illustrates the ideal placing on a sample page layout. The colors fade from dark orange (strongest performance) to light yellow (weakest performance).
All other things being equal, ads located above the fold tend to perform better than those below the fold.
Ads placed near rich content and navigational aids usually do well because users are focused on those areas of a page."
Do yourself a favor and print this free Adsense Heatmap PDF and pay close attention to where the orange and gold blocks are. Place your ads there as soon as you begin monetizing to avoid wasting time like I did.
If you look at the image of my site above, you will notice 2 ad units (middle and right) and 2 link units (left) all above the fold. With the exception of the ad unit on the upper right side, all of them are within a bright orange or gold block on the heatmap. I also have another ad unit in the orange block at the bottom of the content area that you cannot see in this image.
I do not place Adsense on every page nor do I use the maximum number of ads allowed on webpages where I do use it. It just depends on what I am trying to achieve on a page as well as how the page looks. I don't want it to be too cluttered and send my visitor's running!
